Stress: Part II – Eliminate, Manage, Cope?

So, now that you understand the mechanics of stress, all that’s left to do is divide and conquer, right? Identify the stressors interfering with your mental, emotional, and physical well-being and all will be good. Well, if it were that easy, the harmful type of stress that chips away at people’s health and happiness would have been eradicated long ago. Let’s face it. Watching the evening news is a stress-inducing activity. Hey, just reading about the effects of stress is stressful. Uncertain times whether it be political or personal, work or family related eat away at us. When we feel out of control, we fret, we stew. And we soon feel overwhelmed. Eliminating all stress is impossible for the living. It can’t be done. So, our focus needs to shift toward managing stress and coping with the stress we, regretfully, can’t purge entirely from our lives. These strategies can help you get a handle on stress.
  1. Get moving
Physical exercise can metabolize excessive stress hormones and restore your body and mind to a calmer, more relaxed state. When tension mounts, take a brisk walk in the fresh air. And strive to make physical activity a part of your daily routine.
  1. Get more sleep
A catch 22, you say, because insomnia is one of your stress-related symptoms? Then focus on establishing a sleep routine that includes relaxation tactics before you hit the hay. Reading, a warm bath, unwinding with a favorite TV show can all help to slow a racing mind. Try to retire and wake at approximately the same time each day. And be patient. Stress-induced sleep habits form over time, so don’t expect them to vanish in a day or two.
  1. Give yourself a break
The aim for perfection can’t help but cause stress. Seek to do your best then allow yourself to be content with your best effort. Celebrate the achievement of realistic accomplishments and goals rather than focusing on how much better/more the situation/project could have went.
  1. Accept that you cannot control everything
Ours is not a perfect world. News flash, right? Some things are within our power to change/improve upon/walk away from, while others are beyond our ability to do anything about it. The sooner we learn to step back and distinguish between those two categories, the sooner our stress load will lighten.
